London, England
More then ever illegal drivers have had their cars seized by Police in London. Nearly 32,000 cars were sized by police where drivers where found to be driving without a valid licence or car insurance in the year to April 2008. That’s more then twice the number in 2007.
Experts say that this is only a very small proportion of the real number of illegal drivers in London. The city startet impounding vehicles only in 2005 with 643 cars. By 2006 it was 5,886 cars as Police started to use automatic Numberplate Recognition Systems.
Police claim that costs resulting from accidents involving illegal drivers increase insurance premiums by £30 for each driver in the UK, but cyclists and pedestrians are most often the victims of hit-and-runs linked to illegal motorists.
