How To Drive More Eco

Thursday Jul 9, 2009

Cutting emissions and costs on the road can be easy too. Some car companies are launching eco-driving initiatives to help motorists reduce their gas bill and be kinder to the environment. The Smart company is one of them. It all starts with three easy to remember steps known as GAS, which can save you 15-20% on fuel and emissions.

Top Ten Fuel-Saving Tips

Gears:
Stay in as high a gear as you can, for as much of your journey as possible.

Anticipation:
Look well ahead and adapt your speed to what is happening in the distance.

Smooth driving:
Accelerate and brake as little as possible to maintain momentum, thus saving fuel.

Keep your foot off the accelerator when switching on the ignition - most cars won’t need the extra revs.

Try not to fill the tank up. Drive at reduced weight and run at half full.

Forget the throttle and only use engine breaking downhill

Reduce driving speeds where possible - higher speeds use more fuel.

Avoid air conditioning where possible. Heatwaves excepted.

Regularily check tyre pressure - under inflated tyres use more fuel and need replacing more often.

Turn the engine off if stationary for more then 10 seconds.

Reduce loads, clear your boot of unnecessary junk.

Regularily check air and fuel filters as well as spark plugs - clogged filters can reduce efficiency.

Roof racks increase drag - take them off when not in use.
