Semi / Car Accidents on Interstate 80 in Iowa Winter Storm 2008

I thought to take a camera while driving in and after some storms in Iowa. There is never a shortage of idiots when it comes to winter driving.
I had to drive I-80 from Newton to West Des Moines, a 60+ mile stretch at 4pm 1/25/10, during the worst blizzard of the season so far. It definitely was not fun, and the ditches looked pretty much like that, if you could even see the ditch.
@weiserbud67 the worst accidents happen when there is a idiot driver driving 30mpg and situation is safe for 60
@x11115 PLEASE PULL YOUR PANTS BACK UP
what kind of tired do you have in the states? Shit.. Learn to drive
And fix better tires.. We had 1 meter snow in Sweden and our Roads and Highways did NOT look like that… LOL
Dumb… that is very dangerous. You should not be shooting a camera while driving period especially in the snow. I don’t buy that shooting from the hip nonsense you should have both hand on the wheel. Many accidents are caused by distractions such as cell phones. Maybe you won’t get in an accident but you sure set a bad example. My friend told me a story of this lady he saw on a cell phone flip her car and get thrown out of her window right in front of him. Later to die on the ground.
jan 8 2010. 103 cars in the ditch. 10 semis
boooo ur wierd
Bad accidents happen on 80 east in Illinois alot too….
the only way to prevent most accidents like these ones is to SLOW DOWN!!!! and dont TAILGATE the other cars in front of you!!!!!
Guys its not just about cars. I drove these kind of trucks in European winters. Incorrect brake balance between the tractor and trailer is a major cause which can lead to a jacknife incident like these. Another one is that in sheet ice conditions the trailer will slide sideways of its own accord down the camber of the road into the gutter. I have seen two trailers slide into the ditch sideways and the trucks were not even moving at the time because of the camber. Now that is scary to watch.
fuck… road on dead!!! Nice video… bad time…
muy buen video me gusta ber los accidentes para manejar con mas precausion
never use brakes on black ice, put in nutral and roll, steer only
Live in williamsburg exit, Love this video. You did a good job.. Enjoyed..Lee Ann
I used to live in IOWA that is nothing bc we get used to seeing dumbasses driving like that.I live in nebraska I don’t think is as bad..but it does happen everywhere where ppl think they know mother nature.
Crashes Happen Because Dumbassas Think They Can Drive Fast In Snowy Conitions And Keep The Car Under Control-I Was In An Accident Last Year Wit My Family And We Hit Black Ice FLew Off The Highway And Into A Ditch Semi Trailer Did The Same ANd Landed 60 Yards Ahead Of Us.
I think the biggest problem is that people drive with blinders on. If you are driving in conditions like these and passing a semi in the right lane, but that semi is trying to merge because grandma is merging in at 25 mph and you don’t let him, how fast can he stop. Of course if you did slow down the guy tailgaiting you would plow into you and cause a pileup. Seen it dozens of times.
I’m sorry, what is the music?
I just wanted you to know I am thankful for people like you who have the guts to show the rest of us that driving in the winter is no joke, and for showing us that where you are is a pretty nasty winter storm area. I am in Michigan, we get bad here, but nothing like what you have there.
Curtis….I know that most of these accidents are due to the autos these guys encounter on the road. They don’t know that when you pull in front of a big rig and slow down, a crash is inevitable in these conditions. I really had no purpose for shooting this video other than I didn’t think anyone would believe how bad this section of I-80 in Iowa is. It was never meant to show anyone as being dumb but alot have taken it wrong. Thanks for your comment.
I’ll be the one to say it, THANKS! I am a trucker myself, as long as your being safe, which it sounds as though you are, keep recording. It lets everyone know what to expect out there. My guess is some of the nasty comments you have gotten are from 4 wheelers not us truckers! Good Luck.
Hey sunshine, you’re definitely not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you? I told you I was not looking at or through my camera. I was holding it in front of me and turning my hand as I watched the road. No different than holding coffee.
you are obviously still not looking at the road it’s scary to think that you work on the highway….you should know better then!
The camera is held below my chin and I “shoot from the hip” so to speak. I don’t have my eye in the viewfinder. It would be more dangerous to dial a phone number while driving but thanks for your concern Slamnchica
I work on the highway and my job takes me between Des Moines and the Quad Cities.
All I have to say is that it’s dumb asses like you that go out and record this stuff and slow down to look at this stuff that end up in the ditches!!!! I have lived in Iowa my whole life off of I-80…this is how it always is in the winter! I hope I never run into you on the Interstate, or that anyone else does for that matter! Put the camera down and DRIVE!
